Narragansett Bay

Save The Bay was founded on the community’s desire to protect our most precious resource - Narragansett Bay. To do that, Save The Bay has focused on the development of a committed constituency for the Bay. Children and adults throughout this region have learned the tremendous value the Bay brings to our economy, our environment and our quality of life.

How People Are Making a Difference

Overwhelmingly, we have found, people want a cleaner, healthier Narragansett Bay. But many are unsure of how they can make a difference.

Becoming a member of Save The Bay is just one of many ways to be more proactive. Who Saves The Bay? is a campaign meant to demonstrate that every individual has the means to help save the Bay. People can volunteer for our eelgrass program, participate in a shoreline cleanup or properly dispose of household hazardous waste. Businesses can donate in-kind services. Community leaders can make protecting the Bay and its watershed a priority. Teachers can go the extra mile when it comes to Bay education.

Who Saves The Bay? celebrates a multitude of activism by paying tribute to individuals who put their time, talent or resources to Bay-saving use, both big and small. These people bring the best of themselves to Save The Bay.

The campaign’s heart and soul is its underlying question: “What can I do to help save the Bay?”

The goal is to provide answers by example. The end result is to encourage people to take action and be able to answer the question Who Saves The Bay? with just one word:

“Me.”

In defense of Narragansett Bay and its watershed, Save The Bay has watched over the activities and programs of the government and the citizenry that degrade the environmental quality of the Bay, basin, and watershed. Save The Bay provides educational opportunities for children and adults to explore the Bay, fostering a understanding and a sense of personal responsibility for the resource.

Save The Bay’s history is one of accomplishment for the Bay. Once choked by raw sewage and dying a slow death from industrial toxins, the Bay is now making a comeback. There is still room for vast improvement, but more people than ever before are able to swim, fish, sail and enjoy the waters of Narragansett Bay. What follows is a timeline reflecting Save The Bay’s history and charting important milestones we have achieved toward protecting Narragansett Bay.
